OHA Grant to Extend Support to “Ho`okuleana” Project
In December 2007 the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) awarded the Alaka’ina Foundation a grant to support a hands-on, field-based science program for educators and students on Maui and Moloka’i. This project will provide training for teachers on the use of state-of-the-art technologies in the field and in classrooms for studying and monitoring watershed systems. The initial teachers’ workshop will provide educators the resources to instruct their students in grades 4-12 on the use of technology tools such as global positioning systems (GPS), geographical information systems (GIS), water-testing equipment and digital cameras (still and video). The premise of this project is to develop students’ skills with technology tools while leveraging cultural resources in teaching the importance of the “Ahupua’a” system in Hawaiian culture. Partners in this grant include DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources, Na Pua No’eau, Maui Fishpond Association, Maui Coastal Land Trust, East Maui Watershed Partnership and West Maui Watershed Partnership.

Ho`okuleana Project
The Alaka’ina Foundation has received a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Bay Watershed Education Training (BWET) Program. This grant will fund the Ho’okuleana project for Moloka’i teachers. Ho’okuleana is a professional development program for Moloka’i teachers in grades K-5. The program’s focus is providing teachers with training and technology tools to conduct environmental monitoring projects with their students during in 2007-08. Participating teachers will receive a stipend, and will be involved in three workshops throughout the year. The project also includes purchasing technology tools to be placed on Moloka’i and shared by the teachers for use in implementing their projects, as well as ongoing telephone, email, site and network support from the Digital Bus staff and partners. These partners include the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources, and cultural experts from Maui Community College.
