The Alakaʻina Foundation (AF) was pleased to attend a dedication ceremony of a new passenger van for the Lunalilo Homes (LH). The AF provided the funding for this specially equipped van (lifts and safety equipment) that replaced their 22 year old van.
The van is used not only to take kupuna living in the home on field trips excursions, and medical appointments as well as delivering meals to kupuna in their homes and apartments.
The vision of the Lunalilo homes is Nā kūpuna māhua in kauhale aloha and they opened their doors in 1883 as the Lunalilo Home which was established by the will of High Chief William Charles Lunalilo, who died in 1874 while he was king of the Hawaiian Islands.
Chief Executive Officer of the LH Keola Dean said that the van is a great improvement because of its specialized equipment for lifting wheelchairs and other safety features.
Attending the ceremony were David Mortensen Puʻu kālā (Treasurer) and Bill Villa Kakau ʻōlelo. David remarked "Alaka'ina needs to be very proud of our donation to Lunalilo Home with a much-needed asset. The CEO and staff are extremely appreciative and so are the residents as they now have modern wheels. The van can carry 12 people in seats or 9 with 3 wheelchairs, lots of flexibility, they are ecstatic!!!! The home has approximately 30 residents who now can holoholo with ease and comfort, the staff and residents are all smiles😁😁
