We are on our last leg of summer programs to kick off the start of our new school year. 34 students have helped us to Welcome in the 2025 SY.
The middle students went from Kapukahehu on the westside to a day in Wailau on the North learning about ʻAiʻai & our connection to Hana. Students learned how to make & design their own makau & used hau to make their necklaces before presenting to their parents in their hōʻike.
Our older students have been gathering pōhaku to make & design their own ulumaika at Kawela to visiting ancient ulu maika race tracks in Maunaloa. From mud bathes while harvesting & planting in the loʻi to hula, mele, ʻoli on the Mapulehu shores facing Maui. Theyʻve even researched the many different Cook Islands their languages, cultures, & food. Our camp will start to fill with the Cook Island cousins soon as we continue the cultural exchange started at FestPac in June. Our students are excited & looking forward to more learning tomorrow as I put their culinary skills to the test in preparing inamona, poke, crab, laulau, lomi opae, kalo, ulu & a traditional fest for the aha ʻĀina exchange. From items they gathered, caught, or made themselves.
