CELEBRATE THE ART OF LEI-MAKING AT KAMAʻĀINA SUNDAY
In recognition of May Day, our next Kamaʻāina Sunday, sponsored by American Savings Bank, will be centered around Nā Pua Hawaiʻi (The Flowers of Hawaiʻi). Join us at ʻIolani Palace on May 7 for free tours, live entertainment, lei-making, family-friendly activities and ʻono food. And don't miss out on our exciting lei contests, where the most creative and homemade lei will win a special prize.
Additionally, The Friends of ʻIolani Palace will host a lei contest for a chance to win one of two 12-month ʻOhana Memberships. Lei-makers can enter their creations into one of two categories, Homemade Lei and Creative Lei.
LEI CONTESTS
Homemade Lei - All lei must be homemade and tell a story about the participant’s home or community. All lei must be made from natural materials such as flowers, leaves or shells.
Creative Lei - All lei must be creative and original, and made from inorganic, sustainable and long-lasting materials. Participants may use inorganic, sustainable, long-lasting materials of their choice to create their lei.
Each will be judged on creativity, use of sustainable materials, craftsmanship, and relevance to the theme. Lei must be an original design that has not been previously entered in any other contest and no longer than 40 inches in length. Entries are limited to one per person and must be submitted at ʻIolani Palace on May 7 between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. All lei will be displayed on the Palace grounds throughout the remainder of Kamaʻāina Sunday.
In addition to the lei contest, guests may enjoy performances by Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Winner Kāwika Kahiapo, Ala Wai Elementary School and more. The full entertainment schedule is listed below.
Gates to ‘Iolani Palace will open at 8:30 a.m. with activities and tours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Self-led audio tours will be available for the first 500 attendees. A valid Hawaii State ID, Hawaii driver’s license or proof of Hawaii residency is required for each complimentary ticket. One complimentary ticket per Hawaii resident.
