On Tuesday, July 13, 2021, the Alaka`ina Foundation Board and Corporate Officers of the Alaka’ina Family of Companies presented the University of Hawaii Director of the Papa Lo’i O Kane Wai Makahiapo Cashman with a donation in support of their teaching, training and developing new species of kalo (taro) all the while preserving the culture while sharing it their knowledge and experiences with people of Hawaii and especially the future generation of young adults who have similar values and interests. A department of the University of Hawaii the Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the lo’i has been operating for over 40 years. Dean of the school Jon Osorio was very pleased with the donation. Students at the school prepared a pa’ina (party) to give their mahalo (thanks) to the foundation and family of companies that included pa’i’ai (a form of kalo) and earth oven cooked kalua pua’a (pulled pork).
